Couples Counselling

Picture
Do you feel that your relationship has become derailed? Instead of finding connection and intimacy with your partner, there is conflict, strains and stresses.  Maybe you feel constantly criticized or blamed or perhaps your needs aren't being met.  You feel resentful, hurt and hopeless. These feelings cause you to either lash out to your partner or to withdraw completely.

Perhaps there has been a betrayal in your relationship such as an emotional or sexual affair.  You're not sure if your relationship can ever recover from such a breach in trust and respect.

Maybe you've just had a new baby and the stresses and exhaustion of taking care of a newborn has put a strain on your marriage or relationship.  You are communicating less, arguing more and this has caused an increase in tension and loneliness.  You miss the relationship you had before the birth of your baby but with little time for connection, intimacy and time alone, you wonder if you will ever get back to way things were before becoming parents.

Couples counselling can help you break the cycle of negativity and re-establish connection and intimacy in your relationship.

Emotionally-Focused Therapy (EFT)

EFT has proven to be highly effective in helping couples regain closeness and intimacy.  Developed by Dr. Sue Johnson, EFT has over 20 years of empirical evidence to prove its effectiveness.  As your couples therapist, I will work with you to identify the certain interactional cycles or patterns that are causing you to feel stuck and emotional disconnected in your relationship.  Once these patterns are identified, we will explore new ways of connecting that will ultimately improve your relationship.

Often the anger and resentment that you feel towards your partner is a result of your deeper questioning of "Do I really matter?", "Can I trust you with my fears and longings?" or "Will you take what I am saying seriously?"  My goal in our work together is to help you to turn towards rather than away from each other.  By reaching for your partner you will build trust and regain the connection that you long for.
