FAQs About Therapy

How is therapy helpful? Some benefits of therapy may include:
  • A deeper understanding of who you are and the hopes you have for your future.
  • Develop new strategies to help you cope.
  • Decrease in physical and emotional symptoms.
  • Developing an understanding of your thought patterns that are impacting your mood and behaviours.
  • Identifying your personal strengths and strategies that have helped you through difficult situations in your past.
  • Greater self-confidence and self-worth.
  • Improved relationships.
  • Building of support systems.

What should I expect during our first session?

Our first session is about getting to know each other, building trust and learning about what's brought you to therapy.  I may ask you whether you have been to therapy in the past.  If you have previously participated in therapy I will ask what you liked and didn't like about the experience.  Depending on what's brought you to therapy, I will determine which therapeutic model to practice.  You will get an overview of the therapeutic model and what to expect in future sessions.  All sessions will be approximately 50 minutes in length.

Who decides what we work on during our sessions?

It is important to understand that therapy is a collaborative process.  Initially, it will be important to identify some goals for therapy and what you would like to get out of our work together.  From your goals, I will draw on different therapeutic approaches that I feel would be most appropriate to our work together.  Every session will be an opportunity to talk about the events and experiences that occurred in between sessions, review topics that were brought up in our previous meeting and to create an agenda for our current session. Initially, I will be asking you a lot of questions as I guide you through the therapy process.  As time goes by, you will find that you will become your own guide.  If you are truly committed to our work together, you will get the most out of therapy.

How long will therapy take?

Depending on your goals and specific needs, therapy can be short-term or longer-term.  Initially, I recommend regular meeting weekly.  As you start to see progress and feel better they can be more spaced out.  It is important to know that there is no quick fix or magic pill.  Therapy is a process and does take time. But, it does work.
