Moms are not the only ones who can get postpartum depression. Dads can get it too.

Becoming a new father can be a happy and exciting time full of beginnings and new memories. But for some men, that is not always the case. What happens when feelings of fear, sadness or confusion come up at this time instead? What if you struggle to connect with your baby or dread spending time with your partner and new child?

If you are a new dad and are feeling overwhelmed with this new transition to parenthood, you are not alone. Between 8-10% of men will be diagnosed with male postpartum depression within the first year after their baby’s birth, says a 2019 study. Many more men are likely struggling but remain undiagnosed. The symptoms and signs of postpartum depression in dads can range from fear and sadness to irritability and exhaustion.

Because of the shame and stigma that is often attached to postpartum depression in males, many do not seek out treatment. In fact, it is disheartening to know that 80%, the overwhelming majority of men who are suffering, refuse to get the treatment that they so badly need. This crushing statistic is likely due to the stigma and misinformation around postpartum depression in dads.

What is Male Postpartum Depression?

Postpartum depression is a form of depression that occurs in fathers during the period following a baby’s birth. This type of depression can arise from a variety of different reasons such as:

  •  history of depression

  •  marital issues

  • financial stress

  • maternal depression

  • unintended pregnancy

  • exhaustion

  • absence of help and support

  • feeling overwhelmed with responsibility

Postpartum depression can make it difficult to take care of oneself and one’s family.

Unfortunately, people sometimes mistake postpartum depression in dads for the baby blues. This can get in the way of men recognizing the severity of their symptoms and accessing appropriate treatments. If you are wondering whether you are dealing with postpartum depression or a bad case of the baby blues then check out our blog How to Tell if It’s Baby Blues or Postpartum Depression?
